Brahmi / Ondelaga / Thimare / Urage tambuli is blend of Brahmi, buttermilk or curd and coconut so we can drink like a smoothie or have it with a rice. Brahmi gives lot of health benefits to our body. Regular consumption of Brahmi leaves helps in strengthens your immune system. Tambuli is a type of Raita eaten in the Indian state of Karnataka. Tambuli, being a curd based cuisine, is consumed with rice. Tambuli is derived from Kannada word tampu. (ತಂಪು+ಹುಳಿ —->ತಂಬುಳಿ). Thampu meaning cool/cold. So thambuli is a cooling food.

 

Brahmi is also called as water hyssop. In our local language it is called as Ondelaga or Thimare or Urage. It is staple plant in traditional Ayurvedic medicine. It grows in wet, tropical environment s and it’s ability to thrive under water. Brahmi is used for Alzheimer’s disease, improving memory, anxiety , allergic conditions, tonic for stress.
The Ayurvedic herb is believed to sharpen the Brain by protecting cells and increasing chemicals associated with learning and memory. We can eat fresh or dry. This have antioxidants also helps in removing all the toxins from the body and enhance your skin complexion by stimulating all generation. It is also good for hair problems like dandruff, itchiness and formation of split ends.

The Brahmi leaves thambuli is famous in South Canara region. This is very healthy and authentic recipe. I learned this recipe from my grandmother and mother. They are usually made this thambuli at my home. Our ancestors are healthy because they are doing these types of recipes for daily.

Now a days we are calling organic food but our ancestors are using natural food no proceeded and packaged food. They are very clever and particular about food. Brahmi leaves are one of the medicine plant and very tasty also.

The Brahmi leaves are powerhouse of nutrients. We can grow in our garden so anytime we can have it fresh leaves. It is very good for brain development of kids.

  • First prepare grated coconut. Take one mixer jar, put one handful brahmi leaves , 1 cup grated coconut, 1 red chilly , 1 s jeera, add little water and grind it to a paste.
  • Transfer to a bowl and add 250ml curd or buttermilk to it. Next see the consistency and add water. Then add salt to it.
  • Prepare Tampering: Take one pan add oil, garlic, red chilly. After garlic turns into brown add mustard seeds and curry leaves.
  • Put the tampering to tambuli. Now tasty Brahmi / Ondelaga / Urage tambuli read to serve. You can drink like this or have it with a rice.

Notes

  1. Garlic gives nice aroma to thambuli, so i used in tampering, which is optional.
  2. One Serving is considered up to 3 cups of Brahmi / Ondelaga / Thimare / Urage tambuli.
  3. Brahmi / Ondelaga / Thimare / Urage usage can be adjusted accordingly.
