Ragi porridge is a popular dish made from ragi, also known as finger millet. It is a nutritious and wholesome food commonly consumed in South India. My dear moms, this is for you a healthy porridge powder and recipe that I have given to my toddler. Let’s see what ingredients are added to make ragi porridge powder and how I made porridge.
Porridge is the first food given to a toddler when they start solids. Of Course porridge is always the best food for a toddler. For both the kids I have this porridge when I start the solid to them. Porridge is given strength and nutrients and stomach filler to the toddler.
This recipe is from my grandmother. For my toddler I listen to my granny and doctor advice. Doctor suggests homemade is best so I asked my grandmother and she advised porridge powder with simple and easy steps for my busy life.
All the ingredients here I have taken are whole wheat, Ragi, green gram, and raw rice. Along with this you can add Barley and dals or pulses. All the ingredients are in equal proportion. Ragi is cooling the body so adding equal amounts of wheat is a good choice. It balances Cool and Heat of the body. Green gram is giving extra power to the toddlers. Raw rice gives a thick texture and it helps to make it easy to digest.
All ingredients help to digest and power the body. After soaking and drying everything I am roasting one by one on low to medium flame. Roasting helps to improve the taste of the porridge. And we can store for a longer life at room temperature, if we roast properly. The roasted ingredients are converted into a powder texture. You can make powder separately or together but it should be in a powder texture. You can sieve the powder or directly you can use. But my suggestion is that a toddler is too small is best, otherwise you can skip the procedure of sieving.
For preparing a Ragi porridge take water or milk, jaggery for sweetness and porridge powder. Mix without lumps and boil it until it is thick. While serving you can add ghee to increase the taste of Ragi porridge.

- In a bowl add wheat, raagi, green gram, and raw rice separately. Wash it and soak for 1 or 2 hours.
- Remove the water and dry for 3-4 hours.
- Take a kadai roast the wheat, raagi, green gram and raw rice separately until it gets the aroma.
- After roasting it completely cools down.
- Add the roasted ingredients to a mixer jar and grind to a powder texture.
- Sieve the powder and store it.
- In a saucepan add water or milk, jaggery, porridge powder and mix well without any lumps.
- Stir well and Boil it until it thickens.
- Take a serving cup, pour the porridge and add ghee.
- Mix well and serve to a toddler.
