Kara kaddi is one of the easy snacks.  It is a very popular snack in the south. In our local language this snack is called kara kaddi. Kara means spicy and kaddi means stick. This snack resembles a stick with a little spice so we call it kara kaddi. Along with being spicy it is crispy and tasty too.


Kara kaddi snack is very famous in Mangalore. Even in almost all bakeries we will get this kara kaddi. Even though mangalorean will prepare this snack at home too. You can prepare thick or thin kara kaddi, it’s completely our choice. You can add more spices too for this recipe.

This recipe is very easy and don’t need much ingredients. Besan is main ingredients for this recipe. Along with besan we are adding red chilli powder for spiciness. I used crushed ajwain for more flavour because it will give more delight while you are biting the kara kaddi. Hing and turmeric which gives a little more flavour to the recipe. Adding hot oil for forming a dough makes it crispy and soft.

For making this recipe we need a sev press or snack presser. Snack pressers have different plates to insert. We need a medium size hole plate to presser. Add some dough and press to hot oil. We are directly pressing hot oil so be a little careful about hands. Once the snack turns to golden colour, take out the absorbing paper and leave for a few minutes. And make it like a stick.

This snack will remain at room temperature for almost twenty days. Once it cools down, store in an airtight container. So you can enjoy any time of the day or while you are having a cup of tea or coffee. Kids will love this recipe. You can serve this snack for their snack box.

  • Take a mixing bowl, add besan, sugar, salt, red chilli powder, turmeric powder, crushed ajwain, and mix well. Then Add hot oil and combine well.
  • Add water gradually, bring together and form a soft dough.
  • Take a sev presser, add some prepared dough and close the presser.
  • In a kadai, pour some oil and heat it for frying. Press the sev presser to hot oil.
  • Fry it until it turns to golden brown colour. Take out from hot oil to absorb paper.
  • Easy and crispy Kara kaddi is ready to serve with hot chai or coffee.
